You're just leaving the Main Hall about to investigate a rumor about a powerful new weapon that has been built by a local mad scientist. As you walk out the door, you meet a man near hysteria. You calm him down enough to get a more coherent story from him.
He claims he is a technician in the employ of a mad scientist by the name of Dr. Applebaum. He was contented to work in his lab until he overheard the doctor talking with a colleague, Dr. Onstein, a specialist in some kind of unknown energy.
The man thought he was working on a security system for a rich baron. He was only working on a small piece of the project, and did not know how his device would be used. The scientists were talking about using the new device to blow up the entire kingdom. When everything was settled, they were going to come out and take over.
It all sounds pretty fishy to you (how could one weapon destroy everything?) but the man does use long words and sounds very sincere. He offers to go with you and help. He says he was a Free Adventurer before he went into college. You decide to accept his offer, since he says that you cannot get into the complex without his passcard.
He takes you to the entrance of the underground complex. There is a clear bubble covering the entrance. You hit it with your best weapon, but it did not give. Ted, the technician, takes a small device out of his pocket and inserts it into a slot in the rock next to the covering. You hear a small humm and the cover opens.
