Horseshoe Lake (or Horseshoe Bend) is a small oxbow lake, formed when the meandering nearby river changed its course in 11th century, cutting off a long loop north of Belbury. Separated from the flowing river, the town of Horseshoe which sat on its banks gradually diminished and is now a ghost town.
