The town of Dunderhaven lies about eight miles north of the city of Evenhold on the western banks of the Zyphur River and is the first stop for travelers heading from the capital to the northern reaches of the kingdom and beyond. The nearby royal forest of Cynwood draws both respectable hunting parties and disreputable poachers and bandits to the area, but an able local constabulary keeps the town reasonably peaceful and secure. Dunderhaven is known for its skilled woodwrights who produce fine furniture and other crafts from lumber harvested in the nearby forests.

Dunder Hall, a small castle just south of town, was once the home of a local and well-respected aristocratic family, but in recent years its ownership has passed to a distant and odious relative named Onslow Hargrave who is suspected of cooperating with local toughs. Caverns running below the castle are said to be inhabited by dangerous creatures.
