Burnmarch, also called the Broken Lands and known in antiquity as the plain of Sarkarm, is the most sparsely populated territory in the Kingdom of Evenhold, with its few inhabitants living mostly in or near the town of Eldreth on the western border. Its territorial lord holds the title of Margrave of Burnmarch and is currently the aged Sir Ambril of Eldreth.
The final encounter in the war against the Great Old Ones occurred here in 1 YA and 1,200 years later its marks remain plainly visible. Lashed by the Scourge of Terza, the broad plains and mountain foothills are crisscrossed by scars, some tens of miles long, where vast whips of solar fire struck and broke the landscape. In places where the molten stone was whipped it hardened into huge, fan-like sprays; elsewhere it cooled into undulous hills or wide, dark flats.
A millennium of erosion has begun to crack and soften the landscape, and scrubby vegetation has returned to northern sections of the plains. An exception is Bloodrot Pyre, a hill upon which a Great Old One was slain and whose blood poisoned the surrounding area, leaving it blackened and permanently lifeless.
The land south of Burnmarch was in ancient times the nation of Carthianum but is now a desolate desert inhabited by the goddess Terza.
