Across much of Eamon, days are commonly divided into six watches, with each watch lasting four hours. The six watches are:
- Dead watch (midnight to 4AM)
- Dawn watch (4AM to 8AM)
- Forenoon watch (8AM to noon)
- Afternoon watch (noon to 4PM)
- Even watch (4PM to 8PM)
- Shank watch (8PM to midnight)
The beginning of each watch is called the bell, or sometimes the plumb, so people might agree to meet at the "even bell" (4PM) or when it's "plumb shank" (8PM). Times are also commonly expressed relative to sunrise, sunset, midday, and midnight.
The more precise units of hours, minutes, and seconds are known in Eamon, and may be seen when exact times must be specified, such as in charts that track the movements of astronomical objects. For example, Great Eldur might rise at "the second hour, tenth minute of the Dawn Watch." Outside of such situations, though, it's rare for anyone to express the time of day in such a precise way since few people carry timepieces.
Hours and minutes are commonly used to express duration: "The town is about an hour's walk north."
