Even in a world as full of oddities as Eamon, Opeton City stands out as one of the most inexplicable.
Deep below the plains north of Evenhold lies a hollow, smooth-walled chamber shaped like a flattened sphere nearly a mile in height. Filling this cavernous space are soaring towers and spires laced with elevators, bridges, and tramways, the abandoned remains of a city both ancient and wildly futuristic, and the apparent home of a long-lost society of time-travelers.
The chamber, only recently discovered, was hollowed out around three thousand years ago, with the stone believed to have been removed entirely through massive portals. The city erected inside was inhabited for centuries by humans or human-like residents, but was suddenly abandoned around 600 years ago. The nature and origin of its people, the reason they secretly built their city deep underground, and the event that caused them to leave it are all unknown.
At least one concealed elevator shaft connects the Opeton chamber to the surface, but automated defense systems still active in the city make exploration extremely hazardous.
