Oïl is a language of terrestrial origin that spread to Eamon and is now spoken in parts of Addar. Originally langue d'oïl, the tongue grew from what on Earth is now called Old French, and today is similar to modern French.

Over the past couple of centuries the language has become associated with the pirates who prowl the Malphigian Sea and the Sea of Dreams, such as the notorious Henri La Marque and the crew of his ship L'Intransigeant. To many people it has an unsavory connotation and its use suggests criminality. Speakers are sometimes called Oilers, or (more derisively) Oilies.
