The city-state of Alvard sits in the broad, saddle-like pass between the southern Spartu Mountains and the northern spur of the Sax Range.
Consisting of the town of Alvard and a handful of smaller agricultural villages, the kingdom was ruled for a great many years by the benevolent King Safuis, but on his death in 1195 YA he was succeeded by his cruel son Safuis II whose oppressive rule sparked a rebellion. Though many of the rebels were either killed or imprisoned, one succeeded in locating a magical artifact in a nearby dungeon that led to the king's demise. Supporters of King Safuis II's heir, the equally tyrannical Prince Mondamen, immediately crowned him as the new King of Alvard in a secret ceremony, but his men were quickly killed or jailed by the resistence and Mondamen was forced to flee, escaping north into the mountains with a handful of surviving loyalists. Alvard is now governed by a citizen council.
The Empire of Dorier borders Alvard to the west, and the vast and sparsely-inhabited Plain of Srevi extends far to the east. The rough frontier town of Diablo stands just beyond the kingdom's southern border.
